The Science of Sound
The kids are screaming, the dog is barking, the washing machine is spinning, the dishwasher is humming, the TV is on, the ipad is beeping and I feel myself getting more and more irritated as I try to put my tired baby back to sleep for the fifth time today…
I start thinking thoughts like:
- “Why can’t the kids just be quiet for once!”
- “Nobody cares that I have to put the baby to sleep”
- “Will that bloody dog ever shut-up!”
- “I can’t stand all this noise”
- “SHUT – UP!!!!”
I start reciting the…
So you have just received your beautiful Koshi Chimes and now you are wondering where to hang them and what you can do with them! Here are some of the ways I have used my chimes and ways I have heard other people using theirs over the years...
People often ask where to hang their chimes. So far I have hung mine in some of the doorways in my house using one of those hooks that have a sticker on the back (you can buy from supermarket). Whenever I go through the doorway I dingle…
So you have heard about SoundBirth and now you are wondering if SoundBirth is for you!
Here is a list of 10 reasons for having a SoundBirth and then I will leave it up to you to decide if this is for you or not!
1. You want with ALL of your heart to experience a NATURAL BIRTH.
2. You would like to feel EMPOWERED before, during and after the birth.
3. You feel anxious about how you will manage the pain...without drugs!
4. You have had a previous traumatic birth experience and would like to feel su…
I get it. Not EVERYONE is going to want to have a SoundBirth! We are ALL different. Different thoughts, desires, experiences, partners. Plus it takes courage to do something different!
Not many people (yet) have taken a crystal singing bowl into a birthing suite and had their husband play it for hours and hours... (yes this has actually happened in several Perth hospitals so far!). Trying to get your husband to rub your back a certain way and say the "right" things during labour is hard e…
For those of you who don’t know me I want you to know that even though I have a musical background… I am NOT an amazing singer. I have never been taught how to sing and I have never had to sing for an audience (thank goodness). I put myself in the category of ”normal person just wanting to sing”.
- I sing because I want to.
- I sing for my children.
- I sing because it makes me feel happy.
- I sing while I work.
- I sing in the car.
- I sing in the shower.
- I sing during labour (of course…)
It is important for both the partner and any other support person to know how to play a crystal singing bowl so that there can always be someone there playing the bowl for you (the birthing woman) during each contraction. After all, if the sound of the bowl does indeed become the woman's favourite birthing ritual someone will NEED to be playing that bowl ... believe me!
Make sure your partner practices playing the bowl whenever he / she has a chance BEFORE the birth. It’s NOT a difficult instru…
For the safety of bowl, your ears and other people's ears please follow these bowl playing guidelines!
- ALWAYS place your bowl on its rubber “O” ring no matter what surface you have placed it on. This will keep it stable while you play it and prevent it from shattering if on a rough/hard surface or slipping off a smooth surface.
- Do not put the bowl on people’s bodies and play as it could fall off and break.
- NEVER play too loud near a pregnant belly or baby. I’m speaking to the men here be…
Here I will share with you what I know about these awesome bowls from my own personal experience and from a bit of reading and this will be enough for you and your partner or other birth support person to be able to use your bowl in a safe and effective way during your SoundBirth.
History of Bowls making Sounds!
Have you seen and heard those metal Tibetan singing bowls? The Tibetan monks created these bowls centuries ago to be used for healing, ritual and practical purposes. They are made from a …
I LOVE entrainment! The one and only scientific term that I LOVE!
Since I started reading about entrainment, I can see it working everywhere! And can see how important it is to know about it when it comes to giving birth and being a Mother.
What is Entrainment?
In 1666 Dutch physicist Christian Huygens, the inventor of the pendulum clock noticed that the pendulums of 2 clocks mounted on the same wall had synchronised! This was the birth of the term “entrainment”.
“Entrainment involves the ability o…
This is what I spoke about at the Australian Homebirth Conference in March 2016. I'm sharing this for those who couldn't be there. Enjoy :)
The Most Ancient Tool in the Universe!
Sound, heard and unheard is everywhere and everything.
Sound has been around since before the beeping of technology, the brumming of cars, the singing of humans, the roaring of dinosaurs and even before the BIG BANG that created our beautiful planet.
Sound has the power to destroy walls, create planets and heal bodies…
